Two-factor authentication is a security system used in connection with online shopping to prevent fraud, it makes it harder for fraudsters to misuse your card details. As the name also indicates, it takes two steps to complete the verification. It can either be by approval via your MitID, or by entering your mobile number where you then receive an SMS code, where you use a password sent to you via SMS.

You use two-factor authentication when you pay for something that costs more than 225 DKK/30 euro. For fixed subscriptions/recurring payments, it is only used once when it is set up, it is also used for saved card functions regardless of amount. For security reasons, it is also used for every 5th payment you make.

Two-factor authentication is a law introduced in the E.U., however it also applies to a few countries outside the E.U.

SCA stands for Strong Customer Authentication, and is an EU requirement for online payments. All payments where payment cards are used are covered by SCA, here the customer is introduced to two-factor authentication. This includes two of the three forms of verification from the customer, it can be something the customer knows e.g. a password, something the customer has e.g. a mobile or something the customer is e.g. facial recognition. The two forms of verification used must be independent of each other. SCA is used when setting up a subscription, if you want to save your card details on a site, or you purchase for over 225 DKK/30 euro.

3D Secure is an extra security measure that ensures it is actually the customer who is the cardholder that is using it. The customer either receives an SMS with a one-time code that must be entered to proceed. Or uses their MitID as security, as well as their username and password. With 3D Secure version 2, the same technology is now used across card brands. This means that both Dankort, Visa and Mastercard use 3D Secure version 2.
