Who is Freepay?
Freepay has been in operation since 1998. We strive to be the market's best payment gateway. For more than 20 years, some of Denmark's largest online brands have used Freepay. Freepay is a 100% Danish-owned company with its own software development. Freepay is part of the Freeway Group, which is located in Denmark.

What is a payment gateway?
A payment gateway provides the page where your customer enters their card details, and handles the communication between your website and your acquirer. A payment gateway works exactly like a card terminal at the supermarket. A payment gateway is also called a PSP or payment service provider.

What is an acquirer and acquiring agreement?
An acquirer is a bank or a financial institution. They take care of moving money from one account to another. In this case from your customer's account to your business account. They also check with the cardholder's bank whether there is enough money on the card for the purchase, and whether the card is valid. As a store owner, you must enter into an agreement with an acquirer (an acquiring agreement) in order to accept payment cards. You can easily apply for an acquiring agreement as soon as you have created a Freepay account.
Which acquirer you should choose depends on many things. Including what types of payment cards you want to support. It is also possible to have more than one acquirer, e.g. to get the best price, service or as a backup. If you do not have an acquiring agreement, you can submit an application directly via Freepay and have it processed quickly at the acquirer - so you can quickly get started with your business. We work with both Trust Payments, Shift4, Elavon, Clearhaus, and NETS in Denmark.

Application for an acquirer
Here is how to get started with an application:
#1 Log in to Freepay
#2 Go to Settings, where you find the Acquirer section.
#3 Click Edit on the acquirer you wish to use. Here you will find the application for them.

Freepay Integrations
There are several options when you want to integrate Freepay into your system. We have modules for the most popular webshop platforms and also offer a thoroughly documented API solution for those who wish to create their own integration. Here you can see some of the webshop platforms that Freepay supports: Integration of payment solution | Freepay. If you are missing an integration for your webshop that is not on the list, you are welcome to contact us to have a chat about your options for integrating Freepay into your system.

Setup guide
Once you have received your API key / communication key or merchant number from your acquirer, you are almost there and ready to receive payments from your customers. But you still need to do the following:
#1 Log in to My Freepay and select My Freepay and then Invoice to add a payment card / credit card. Once this is done, select Settings and then select Acquirer. Here you select the acquirer you have made an agreement with, then enter the API / communication key or merchant number you received from your acquirer. Then set the acquirer to Active and Save the changes.

#2 Then select Settings and API Keys again. Here you need to add an API key and give it a name (can be your webshop's name).
#3 Setup of webshop information(Plugins integration can be found here Freepay API.
#4 If you wish to use our API directly, we assign a dedicated person in our development department, where questions can be asked during the development process. This API key gives access to your webshop/CMS/system. It can communicate with Freepay and is not the same API key that comes from your acquirer.
The API key must be inserted under the settings or via Freepay's plugin on your webshop/CMS/system.
How many steps?
How many steps must your customers go through to complete their purchase? Do returning customers need to re-enter all their information? Is the payment process transparent? If users have to go through too many steps, or if it becomes too difficult to complete a purchase, users will not do it. Instead they will choose another webshop that offers the same products, but where it is easier to complete a purchase.
A recommendation is to get Mobilepay, Google Pay and Apple Pay as payment options.

Payment options
Your conversion rate depends on your payment methods. We work with the most popular payment methods in Denmark, so your customers have all options to pay, including MobilePay, Google Pay, Apple Pay, Viabil, Anyday and Freepay Pay By Link. etc. If you have special requests, please do not hesitate to contact us.

More Payment Options (Wallets)
#1 Log in to Freepay.
#2 Go to Settings, where you find the Acquirer section.
#3 Under Wallets, click Edit and here activate the ones you wish to use.
